What is a gastric balloon?

A gastric balloon (intragastric balloon) is a non-surgical weight loss device. A soft silicone balloon is placed in the stomach endoscopically and filled with saline. The balloon takes up space in the stomach, helping you feel full sooner and eat smaller portions.

The balloon remains in place for 6 to 12 months (depending on the type) before being removed.

Who is suitable for a gastric balloon?

A gastric balloon may be suitable for:

A comprehensive pre-assessment is required including dietary consultation.

How is the balloon placed?

The procedure is performed under sedation and takes approximately 20 to 30 minutes. A deflated balloon is passed through the mouth into the stomach using an endoscope.

Once in position, the balloon is filled with sterile saline (typically 400–700ml) through a small catheter. The catheter is then removed, leaving the balloon free-floating in the stomach.

Most patients can go home the same day.

What happens during the treatment period?

Nausea, cramping, and vomiting are common in the first few days as the body adjusts. These symptoms are managed with medications.

During the treatment period, you will work closely with a dietitian to adopt healthy eating habits and portion control. Regular exercise is encouraged.

Follow-up appointments are scheduled regularly to monitor progress and provide support.

Balloon removal

The balloon is removed endoscopically after 6 to 12 months. Under sedation, the balloon is deflated by puncturing it with a needle passed through the endoscope. The deflated balloon is then grasped and removed through the mouth.

The removal procedure takes approximately 15 to 20 minutes.

What results can I expect?

Patients typically lose 10–15% of their total body weight during the balloon treatment period.

Sustained weight loss requires ongoing commitment to dietary and lifestyle changes after the balloon is removed.

Are there any risks?

As with any procedure, there are potential risks. These include:

Contact your doctor immediately if you experience severe persistent vomiting, severe abdominal pain, or notice a change in the colour of your urine to blue-green (indicating balloon deflation).
